Intrabeam® - NEW HOPE FOR BREAST CANCER PATIENTS

Four-year outcomes from an international clinical trial were published in the Lancet, June 4, 2010.  2232 women were diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, of which 996 patients underwent Intra Operative Radiation Therapy (IORT) following lumpectomy, and 1025 patients underwent External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) following lumpectomy. The results in the study group are as follows:
   • IORT was as good as EBRT.
   • The recurrence rate was 1.2 %.
   • Adverse effects rate was 3.3%.
   • Toxicity rate was 0.5%.

The research team concluded:
   • “For selected patients with early breast cancer, a single dose radiation therapy delivered at the
time of surgery by use of targeted intraoperative radiotherapy should be considered as
an alternative to external-beam radiation therapy delivered over several weeks”.
   • Since the risk of local recurrence with IORT is similar to standard EBRT, this procedure should be taken
into consideration taking in account the 3 major concerns of women: Mastectomy vs Breast
conserving  surgery, ease of treatment vs 6 weeks of EBRT and risk of recurrence.
